Software Testing Center - Classes

Welcome to the sample lessons.

Here's the minimum you need to know to explore them:

Q. Do I need to download any other software?

A. No. If you can read this, you're ready to go.

Q. Any tricks I need to know about?

A. Yes, one.

Each lesson is complete on one (sometimes large) Web page.

In order to let you view supplementary material without having to wait to download another page, each lesson has a "false floor". Below that's the basement, where we keep all the extra stuff.

When you click on links you usually branch to material there, then return.

So a lesson page looks like this:

A Sample Lesson

The bottom two Navigation Bars are identical.

The reason there are two of them is so that however you reach the "bottom" of the page, whether by completing the material or by zipping to the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, you'll see and be able to do the same things.

Q. Are my monitor settings okay? (You can skip this if you're not having any problems, and return to it later if you need to.)

A. To check it out, click here

Q. Should I set my monitor to anything special?

A. We've designed the course to work on almost anything.

However, it will work better if you make two quick checks.

(1) Are you using enough colors?

The course works fine in just 256 colors, but if you're using a PC in VGA mode, which only uses 16 colors, a few things will look less than optimal.

Here's how to tell what you've got. Look at the picture of your instructor:

 Instructor's Photo

(a) Does he look clear and sharp?

If so, you have a lot of colors set (16 million on the PC), and all will be fine.

(b) Does he look either very grainy, or blotchy - like he's wearing makeup?

If so, you've got 256 colors set on a PC.

(Whether it looks "grainy" or "blotchy" is a function of whether you've got your browser set to "dither" or "substitute colors" for images.)

It doesn't matter. The course will look fine because it doesn't use any more photos.

(c) Does the picture look really psychedelic, barely recognizable as a human life form?

If so, your PC is probably set to VGA mode (16 colors). If you can set the display to 256 colors or have someone do it for you, some of the colors in the diagrams will look better. If not, forge on; things will be only a little strange.

(2) Is the width set okay?

PCs should be fine. We use a maximum width of 610 pixels, which all PCs should handle.

Some Macs have the width set to 500 pixels as a default. If you haven't changed that, now might be a good time.
